  • An Important Admin Responsibility

Occasionally we get a call or a secure message from an employer stating that they cannot access the Employer myASRS Portal. Sometimes it's because the person listed as the Employer Administrator has left and a new administrator was not assigned prior to their departure, or the new acting administrator is using the old administrator’s login.
  • Don't Skip the 'Employers' Tab!

We understand the convenience of having the Secure Employer Login page bookmarked and jumping straight to the secure side of our website, but if that's your typical process for interacting with AzASRS.gov, you're missing a vast amount of ASRS resources for employers!
  • High-Earning Employees & the ASRS: 415 Limits and Excess Benefits

Did you know there are contribution and pension benefit limits for employees making over a certain amount? Referred to as “415 Limits” based on the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 415, this can be a set of not-well-known, not-often-used rules for employers and their high-earning employees. But for those they apply to, 415 limits have a big impact. Below is an explanation of what 415 limits are, how the excess benefit is administered.

  • When Are You 'Vested' in the ASRS?

Vesting is a term used often when discussing a retirement account. However, the ASRS benefit programs do not have a “vesting” schedule. Members must meet certain requirements before being eligible to receive retirement benefits, health insurance, premium benefit subsidy, long-term disability, or participate in the ASRS service purchase program.

    Refund/Forfeiture

When one of your employees asks about “vesting” with the ASRS, often these members may be referring to the percentage of employer funds they might receive if they decide to refund their account.

  • Employee Vacancies to Fill?

Are you an employer who has vacancies to fill?

While the answer could be to hire retired ASRS members, do not forget that an Alternate Contribution Rate (ACR) is required should you choose to do so.

All ASRS employers are required to pay an ACR for all retired ASRS members who return to work in any capacity, are not actively contributing, and in any position that is similar in duties and responsibilities to that of a position ordinarily filled by an employee.

  • 'Return to Work' Employees and the Alternate Contribution Rate

When an ASRS retiree returns to work for an ASRS employer and meets active membership criteria, then active contributions must begin and the member’s pension is suspended. The member will not receive a pension benefit until they either terminate employment or reduce their hours and re-retires. However, there is an exception to this rule. Under very specific conditions, an ASRS retiree can qualify to remain retired while working for an ASRS employer. It is the responsibility of both the retiree and employer to ensure compliance.

  • Human Resources or ASRS?

Sometimes, it’s hard to know whether you should be helping to answer an employee’s questions about the ASRS or their pension, or when you need to point them our way. In general, if they have questions specific to their account – such as benefit estimates or possible retirement dates – they’ll need to either contact the ASRS or log in to their secure myASRS account. If they have more general questions – what or who the ASRS is, benefits of their pension plan, etc. -  it’s good for employers to be able to have answers.
