Need-to-Know Information If You're Retiring This Summer

Did you know that more than 60 percent of active ASRS members work in the education sector? As a result, more than half of the yearly volume of new retirements at ASRS occur during the summer months. By the time spring break arrives, retirement season has officially kicked off within ASRS offices, as educators begin to plan for their summer retirement. If you are considering retiring this summer, the best way to prepare yourself is to take advantage of the many educational tools available to you.

To help you navigate this important milestone in your career, we offer a number of different educational options to suit your personal learning style. Your first stop should be Retirement Central, which puts all your retirement-related information in one place and provides an excellent overview of options and resources available to you. Group meetings, webinars, videos, eLearning tutorials, checklists, handbooks and website calculators are all available to help explain various facets of retirement and also the process of retiring.

If you are exploring whether to retire at the end of the school year, we strongly recommend you log in to the myASRS secure website and enroll in group meeting as soon as you’re able. Group meetings cover a variety of commonly asked questions and will get busier as we get closer to the end of the school year, with many reaching maximum capacity. Do you understand the different retirement payment options available to you?  Are you familiar with your health insurance options? Are you sure you can afford to retire? All of these questions are easily addressed in a friendly atmosphere where many are seeking the same answers as you.

Also, although the ASRS does offer one-on-one counseling sessions, we first require members to attend a group meeting. In our experience, group meetings are very effective at answering common questions and guiding people to make decisions that are best for them.

We understand retiring can be a daunting or overwhelming thought, but we’re here to help – through the retirement process and beyond. To view a description of available classes and the upcoming schedule, make sure to visit the Member Education page of our website.
